A group of Madera youth who tend to a local garden will open its gates Saturday to celebrate Earth Day; residents are invited to see it and help care for it.

The local event observes the worldwide celebration of Earth, which aims to increase awareness and support for environmental protection. Earth Day was commemorated Tuesday this year.

The Inspirational Roots Community Garden, founded by youth near the corner of Lake and Fourth streets, will be open from noon to 2 p.m. with music, food, informational booths and games for children. Other activities for children will include a petting zoo with goats, and a presentation with dogs and cats by staff from the Central California Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The Earth Day Celebration by the Madera Youth Leaders, which is part of the nonprofit organization Madera Coalition for Community Justice, will also serve as a dropoff site for electronic recycling…
