A local university is looking for some young Madera poets who want to turn their writing into dollars.

The College of Letters and Science at National University’s Fresno campus has launched its 16th annual Young Writers’ Competition and is offering $1,250 in cash prizes to the winners. The contest is open to three categories of students: grades 4-6, 7-8 and 9-12.

The young writers are being asked to write in verse about what they most enjoy doing and entitle their poem “My favorite pastime.”

All entries must be received by May 20...
