Youth center hosts Elks District Hoop Shoot
Local champions throughout the Central Valley competed Saturday in the annual Elks’ District Hoop Shoot at the John W. Wells Youth Center to move on to the state finals in Sacramento this week.
It was the first time the Madera Elks Lodge sponsored the district finals of the free throw event.
The athletes were divided by sex into age groups of 8-9, 10-11, and 12-13. Participants were allowed five warm up shots. The first elimination round saw those sinking the best out of 10 shots move on to the second round. The second round saw the best of 15 shots to have a winner crowned. If there was a tie, there was a five free throw shoot off.
The closest competition came in the 10-11 boys group between Jose Lopez of Wasco and Michael Ficher from Tulare. After the first round Lopez was down by two but in the second round he sank all 15 of his shots to force a shoot off. In the playoff Lopez continued his hot streak by sinking five straight for a total of 21 in a row to win the title...
