Yard fire damages house

A fire rapidly spreading through dry grass in the backyard of a home in the 28300 block of Arizona Avenue, just west of Road 28 1/2, destroyed a fence and burned into the back porch of the residence before being stopped by firefighters.

Madera County fire engineer Martin Lawler said the blaze was caught just in time.

“It was a good stop (on the fire), given we have just one person on a fire engine. The house could have easily been destroyed. The vegetation had been mowed once but it was dry and still tall enough to fuel the spread of the flames. Two of the female bystanders trying to help were taken to Madera Community Hospital with smoke inhalation,” Lawler said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, Lawler said, but appeared to have started in the northwest corner of the backyard and spread rapidly due to the wind from there to the house...
