Worker on Ave. 9 killed

A workman with a crew laying fiber optic cable along Avenue 9 was hit and killed by a car as he crossed the road Wednesday about 8:30 a.m. near Road 35, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The 25-year-old man from Bakersfield had reportedly crossed the roadway to retrieve a shovel from the other side and didn't see the approaching car, according to CHP Sgt Michael Donnelly.

The Madera County Sheriff's Department’s public information officer, Erica Stuart, identified the man as James Chavala, Jr.

“He was struck by a westbound 2003 Lexus IS 300, driven by a 38-year-old woman from Fresno. The incident is under investigation and we are still in the process of interviewing all callers to 911, and any other (potential) witnesses,” Donnelly said...
