The Madera Republican Women Federated granted $4,500 to nine high school graduates who are headed to four-year universities and junior colleges this fall. The scholarships were awarded based on merit, regardless of political affiliation, officers said.
“The one thing the winners’ applications had in common was that each one totally captured our imagination and enthusiasm. These are the most impressive scholars. We picked them knowing they will succeed,” said Leslie Labrucherie, the first vice president of MRWF.
The recipients were accompanied by their families to a dinner in their honor during a regular meeting of the MRWF. Labrucherie introduced each winner and their family before the nearly 50 attendees at the Madera Municipal Golf Course on Thursday.
The graduates shared about their academic plans and career goals, as well as their hopes and fears about attending college. Then each 2013 scholarship recipient received a $500 check from Labrucherie on behalf of her civic group of politically active women...
