Woman distracted by baby hits semi, CHP says

Distracted driving isthought to be the cause of a crash on Highway 145 just north of Avenue 12 that sent a young Madera woman and her baby to the hospital Wednesday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The woman sustained injuries in the crash and was taken toMadera Community Hospital. The baby was secured in a carseat and did not appear to be injured but was taken to the hospital for observation.

The woman was driving on Highway 145 just north of Avenue 12 when she said she turned to attend to her baby crying in the back seat, officers said.

The Honda Accord crossed directly into the path of a southbound semi-truck and hit the semi at roadway speed. The semi-truck driver braked and attempted to miss the oncoming car but could not do so in time...
