Two dead birds from the Ahwahnee area tested positive for West Nile virus this month — the first reported cases in Madera County this year.

The county’s Mosquito and Vector Control District sent the birds earlier this month to the California Department of Public Health laboratory to be tested for the virus.

So far, 23 counties in the state have reported West Nile virus activity.
