Despite thunderstorms, a low cloud ceiling and lower than normal temperatures, the fifth annual West Coast Formation Flyers gathered for their clinic this past weekend at Madera Municipal Airport. More than 60 planes, which began arriving Thursday, concluded the event with an “all up” Sunday before departing to their home airfields.
Thousands of Maderans watched from backyards, from vehicles parked near the airport or from the grassy knoll at the airport’s terminal office as formations grew from four planes to well over a dozen throughout the clinic.
The flyers came from all over the western states and beyond. A group of six planes arrived Friday having flown from Denver, Colorado. For communication the pilots have call signs that also double as nicknames like Jawbone, Goose, Cobra, McFly, Gadget and many others.
