Water district renames pump station after late president

Current and past board members of the Gravelly Ford Water District gathered Monday to rename the district’s main pump station after the late George Andrew, the district’s longtime board member and past president.

A newly installed plaque marks the George Andrew Pump Station where the Gravelly Ford Canal meets the San Joaquin River south of Avenue 6 near Road 22.

“It’s because of George’s persistence that we have a contract with the federal government for water,” said GFWD manager Don Roberts. “We wanted to honor him for more than 50 years as a board member and the 28 years he served as president of the district.”

Andrew served as the district’s board president from its inception in 1961 until 1989. He continued to serve on the board until his death in December 2011 at age 87...
