The Madera Valley Water Company held its annual shareholders meeting Thursday night to explain a $5 increase in monthly water bills and improvements to its main office.
Starting in February, the company’s customers will see a $5 increase in their current $50 water bill. Quarterly billing of unimproved lots will increase by $2 a month.
The company’s general manager, Gregory Rodgers, explained that the increased water rates were the result of a harsh summer the previous year.
“We try our hardest not to raise rates,” Rodgers said. “But we’re at the mercy of the weather. If it rains every day in the winter, that’s great for recharging the ground, but last year we had two months more of summer than we usually do. Because of that, our electric bill was $30,000 more than it usually is.”...
