Donnie Maxwell, operations manager of legal group Richard A. Ciummo & Associates, which handles public defense cases for Madera County, was arrested Tuesday afternoon. His crime?

“Well I don’t have a beard, for one, and these clothes don’t fit the bill either,” Maxwell said with his hands handcuffed behind his back.

Maxwell’s “arrest” was part of a Madera tradition established in 1931 during Old Timer’s Week, which culminates in the Old Timers Day Parade this Saturday.

Today and tomorrow from around 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Madera-area residents with concerns about those who haven’t donned traditional garments or facial hair associated with Madera’s Western agricultural roots - such as cowboy boots, vests, frilly dresses or other garb - can call members of the Madera County Historical Society to have their friends and co-workers arrested...
