Wasuma, Ranchos win Academic Pentathlon

Ranchos Middle School and Wasuma Elementary have two new plaques to display as a result of students who excelled in a Madera County five-event academic competition that concluded over the weekend.

Twenty-five teams of 13 middle schools competed in the 2013 Academic Pentathlon. Ranchos Middle School took first in the seventh grade competition and Wasuma Elementary won first in the eighth grade one.

The annual Academic Pentathlon is put on by the Madera County Office of Education and sponsored by the Madera County Schools Foundation. Local individuals, businesses and organizations donate to the event. Volunteers from the community also help by judging academic events.

The Academic Decathlon held at Ranchos Middle School on Saturday included speech, literature and Super Quiz contests. The public was only allowed to attend the Super Quiz, in which teams of students were asked a series of science questions relating to this year’s theme, “Physical Principals, Structure and Function.” Teams of four to six players were given a limited amount of time to answer, after which proctors check and signal whether each student answered correctly...
