In a time of budget cuts and smaller staffs, the Madera County Library is relying on volunteers to keep up with demands.
“We couldn’t survive without them,” said county librarian Ellen Mester, who partnered with Madera High School last month to seek student volunteers.
Nine high school students answered her request and now regularly visit the library after school to decorate, put books back on shelves, and help youngsters find books.
“They help tremendously,” Mester said. “With the staff reductions and budget reductions we’ve been facing and will face in the coming years, we depend on our volunteers to help us a lot with tasks like shelving.” ...
