Valedictorian Micaela Torres can barely wait to get back to school to pursue medical degree

Madera South High School valedictorian Micaela Torres is eager to pursue her pre-med cognitive science degree at UCLA. So eager, in fact, that she is trying to register for a summer session so she can start before the fall.

“I’m going pre-med because I wanted to be a neurosurgeon, or maybe just a surgeon,” said Torres, 18, who hopes to attend UC Davis or UC Irvine for medical school.

Torres took several Advanced Placement (AP) classes – including chemistry, biology, calculus BC, and literature in this school year alone – to earn a 4.62 GPA, making her the No. 1 student in Madera South’s class of 2013.

“I also took honors human anatomy and physiology,” she said. “I think I’m ahead like 26 college credits.” ...
