University women seek science-minded girl

The deadline to apply is nearing for seventh grade girls hoping to attend a science camp in June at California State University, Fresno.

Madera girls with an interest in math, science, engineering and/or technology must turn in applications and an essay by Saturday to attend Tech Trek. Those applying must have at least a B-minus grade point average.

Except for a $50 family commitment, the $800-plus tuition is underwritten by the local chapter of American Association of University Women.

“If we can influence even one young woman to strive to go to college as a result of her Tech Trek experience, then we will have achieved AAUW’s mission,” said Linda Leach, president of the Madera chapter. “If she eventually chooses a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) career such as biologist, engineer, or doctor, that would be frosting on the cake.” ...
