Town hall discusses public safety

Dozens of Madera-area residents gathered for a town hall meeting earlier this week where a panel of officials discussed ways to improve public safety and answered questions from concerned citizens.

Organized by State Sen. Anthony Cannella (R-12th), each of the five panelists started the evening with a talk on the subject of their choice.

Madera County Sheriff John Anderson led off Thursday’s proceedings with a presentation about the continued presence of illegal marijuana grows both within forested areas and on the Valley floor.

“Fresno, Bakersfield, Modesto, they have crime problems,” Anderson said. “We don’t. Our problem here is drugs, which can create crime.” ...
