YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK (AP)—A series of storms that dumped several feet ofsnow on the high Sierra hasforced the closure of a major road through Yosemite National Park.

After the storms dumped an estimated 5 1/2 feet of snow on the Tuolumne Meadows area of the park, park officials closed Tioga Road for the rest of the winter season.

Tioga Road is the eastern gateway to the park, and a scenic east-west crossing through the Sierra Nevada.

In announcing the closure of the road on Monday, park officials also said they had closed Glacier Point Road, a popular destination to overlook Yosemite Valley.

Both roads typically close in the late fall when heavy snows arrive and reopen when weather conditions allow in the spring.

Despite the closure of the two roads, Yosemite is open year round with snow removal on most other roads in the park.
