Thousands ordered out of Avenal and Pleasant Valley prisons

The medical receiver for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation has ordered thousands of inmates out of Pleasant State Prison and Avenal State Prison due to Valley fever.

Medical receiver J.Clark Kelso ordered the CDCR to exclude black, Filipino and other medically risky inmates from the two prisons because those groups are more susceptible to the fungal infection, which originates in the region’s soil.

Also included in the exclusion are those who are sick, infected with HIV, are undergoing chemotherapy or have a depressed immune system.

According to Joyce Hayhoe, a spokesperson for the receiver’s office, almost 3,300 inmates will be affected by the order...
