Two high school students spoke about their experiences during a four-night Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) camp at a Madera Sunrise Rotary Club meeting this week. The students were recommended to attend by their principals and a Rotary committee.

Carlos Hernandez from Madera South High School and Daniel Garcia from Madera High School had participated in the Rotary International District 5220 RYLA Camp in Oakhurst. Attendees came from as far as Sacramento. The students were divided into clubs and slept in cabins for four nights. During the camp, they were involved in activities that enhance leadership skills and listened to special guest speakers on the subject.

Garcia was on the skit committee and performed nightly during the students’ dinner. Hernandez chose to be on the newspaper committee and helped produce a student newspaper for all campers to take home. Daniel also is an officer in the local Interact Club sponsored by Sunrise Rotary.

The pair spoke at the meeting Wednesday morning at Madera Municipal Golf Course...
