Newborn found in cupboard

A teenager mother faces murder charges after depu-ties found her newborn wrapped in a plastic bag and stuffed in a cabinet below a bathroom sink inside a home on Chapin Street near Avenue 16 in Madera.

Authorities were not releasing her name as of Wednesday night.

The 17-year-old reportedly showed up Friday at an area hospital, where doctors discovered she was suffering from postpartum bleeding, according to Madera County sheriff’s spokeswoman Erica Stuart. When asked where her baby was, the young woman denied giving birth.

Due to a language barrier, doctors, staff and deputies needed hours to learn where she lived, Stuart said. The suspect speaks Mixteca Baja, one of several dialects spoken in the Oaxaca region of Mexico...
