With his 18th birthday only a week away, Jorge Navarro of Madera walked homeward with his girlfriend and another male friend along Road 27, near Martin Street. A car pulled up alongside and Navarro was shot once in the head at close range.
The killing happened Tuesday by 7:30 p.m. as the trio were walking from a nearby convenience store. A small blue or silver car was seen leaving the area. The murder is the fifth of the year in Madera County.
Authorities were not able to confirm if the shooting was gang related, but Sheriff John Anderson said it was not random based on detective investigations so far.
