Teen gang member arrested in string of shootings

A teenage gang member from Madera was arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and negligent discharge of a firearm last week for crimes that took place late last month, police said.

Jose Cortez, 19, is suspected in a string of shootings in late June that left three people with non-fatal injuries, including one victim who was shot in the face.

Cortez — a self-admitted member of the Norteños street gang — is one of at least three suspects the Madera Police Department expects to arrest for the crimes.

“We have two additional people identified,” said Detective Sgt. Robert Salas. “A 19-year-old and 17-year-old are thought to be involved in the shootings and we are working diligently on their apprehension.” ...
