Teachers deliver pleas in final board meeting of the year

Hundreds of teachers and hours of discussion were part of the Madera Unified School District’s (MUSD) final board meeting of the year earlier this week.

Clad in red Madera Unified Teachers Association (MUTA) shirts, the teachers packed into the MUSD board room before the meeting began as a show of strength in long-running contract disputes.

Since May of 2012, MUTA members and the district have been at odds over proposed caps to health insurance payments and modification of contract language.

Tuesday’s meeting saw a majority of the teachers — who have for weeks stepped back rhetoric from a place of aggression to discussion — deliver hundreds of personalized letters that asked the board to return to the bargaining table...
