Svanda won’t run for council

City Council Member Gary Svanda said Wednesday night that 2014 will be his last year on the council — and he said it in an odd way.

He said that he, uniquely, was the right person to bring up the matter of granting a raise in the amount paid to members of the City Council.

For many years, council members by statute have received $350 a month. By state statute, that amount could go up to as high as $500 a month.

“I was curious to see what the last time was that we took a look at compensation for the city council, and I’m in a perfect position to bring this item forward, because I’ll be serving out my final year as a council member, and I believe that the code reads that if we were to approve something that increases the salaries of the council members, it has to take effect when a new council member comes onto the board,” Svanda said. “That way, we wouldn’t be voting on something we would be getting until after the next time an election comes around.” ...
