Hail cannons shot to protect crops

Some Maderans woke early Wednesday to the sound of hail suppression cannons while motorists who drove to work later that morning were met with flooded streets and a downpour.

“Madera got .34 inches of rain overnight and there are still more showers and isolated thunderstorms expected to pass through the Fresno to Merced area (Wednesday),” said Daniel Harty, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Hanford.

Rain totals in Madera reached .55 inches by Wednesday afternoon.

The rain was expected to taper off Wednesday night but a colder storm is predicted to hit Madera today and last through tomorrow, Harty said...
