County unemployment drops below 15 percent

The unemployment rate in Madera County dropped below 15 percent for the first time this year in May, thanks to an increase in farming jobs.

The jobless rate last month was 14.3 percent — down from April’s 15.5 percent and last May’s 15 percent — according to the latest Employment Development Department statistics.

EDD figures show that 2,000 additional farm jobs in Madera County were filled between April and May, bringing the number of filled farm jobs to 9,300.

One hundred jobs that were lost during the same time period in the trade, transportation and utilities sector were made up for in the manufacturing industry...
