Five young women from Madera and Liberty high schools ate as guests of honor with their families at a Soroptimist International of Madera weekly meeting cat-ered by Madera Community Hospital. The quintet had been selected for the club’s Girl of the Month honors for spring.
Each month during the school year, the Soroptimists recognize a local high school student with its award. The girls are selected based on a seven-question application that covers the recipients’ academic and community service activities as well as plans and goals for after high school.
The spring awards for January through May were presented Thursday at the United Methodist Church on Sunset Avenue.
Ashley Romine, the daughter of Joe and Jennifer Romine, attends Madera High School, carries a 4.6 grade point average, and is a member of California Scholarship Federation (CSF). The January Girl of the Month is active in her church and was selected defensive player of the year in water polo. She is the scorekeeper for her dad’s wrestling team and helps him coach the team, he said. She has received a scholarship to attend Simpson University in Redding.
