Soroptimist International celebrates 70 years

Women helping women is the main focus of a local 70-year-old service club that celebrated its anniversary this week in the event center at Cru Winery. Past and present members gathered to commemorate this milestone in the history of Soroptimist International of Madera.

Soroptimist President Karan Bursey-Long served as mistress of ceremonies for the celebration. Long-time member Celeste Voyles introduced former members in attendance. These included sisters, Stella Moosios and Irene Adams, Chris Simonian, Kathy Karst, Betty Bass, Lucille Gamble and life member Paula Baraldi.

Baraldi had a perfect attendance record for 30 years, she said. The women enjoyed reminiscing about their many adventures attending regional, state and national conventions together.

Many of the past presidents in attendance brought their scrapbooks Thursday night to share. Changes in attitudes and technology were evident in the books on display. Newspaper clippings in the older books, as recent as the 1960s, identified all the women in the photos as “Mrs.” followed by the name of their husband...
