A Madera man claiming to have been followed and shot at by gang members, fled his car and hid out in an orchard off of Avenue 21 near Road 28 1/2 until law enforcement arrived, according to the Madera County Sheriff’s Department.

The driver was alone, and somehow not injured in the incident, deputies said.

Madera County Sheriff John Anderson said the shooting happened about 4:45 a.m. Saturday morning and detectives were investigating the case.

The car appeared to have been sprayed with large caliber rounds, and the gaping bullet holes were visible all down the passenger side of the late model BMW car. Bullets also shattered the windshield and the passenger side window...
