Gemstone wholesaler shows wares

A local jeweler introduced his supplier to his customers in an annual private gem show late this week.

While Chris Miller usually carries gems at Leighton’s Jewelers, the sale was unique because David Artinian, president of ClearCut Inc., brought more than twice the product to his store for a day.

Wedding sets, diamonds, pendants and earrings, among other jewelry, which is usually displayed in glass cases were removed to make room for thousands of fine colored gemstones.

San Diego-based ClearCut Inc. is a wholesaler and importer of gems. Artinian said he travels around the world to places such as Thailand, Africa and Sri Lanka, buying poorly cut or rough gem stones. He then takes them to a branch of his company in eastern Thailand where four cutters, mostly family, shape the stones...
