Sheriff says man, 101, was robbed by phony roofers

Two men posing as professional roofers bilked a 101-year-old Chowchilla man out of his safe, Madera County Sheriff’s officials said Tuesday.

Around 3:30 p.m. Saturday, two Hispanic men in their 30s or 40s knocked on the door at a man’s home on Robertson Boulevard, sheriff’s spokeswoman Erica Stuart said.

The two men claimed they were there to fix the house’s roof and entered the home without coercing the victim, Stuart said.

“They must have given a pretty darn good story to get in there with no trouble,” Stuart said while noting the two suspects did not use a weapon or threats during the crime...
