Madera County Sheriff John Anderson issued two fraud alerts Monday afternoon to warn local residents about a pair of phone scams that have already cost one senior citizen nearly $5,000.

The first scam targets phones for stored personal data, Anderson said, such as credit card numbers or banking information.

It can be recognized when your phone displays a series of strange numbers — sometimes 10 zeroes — as an incoming call, when in actuality the call is likely a phishing program looking to steal your private information.

Anderson advised residents not to answer the call and block the number to prevent further scamming attempts...
