Senior Farmer dinner brings out laughter and memories

It was a night full of laughter and remembrance inside the Madera Municipal Golf Course’s St. Andrews Ballroom this week as close to 200 farmers, politicians, and area residents gathered to pay tribute to Sarkis Sahatdjian, Madera’s 2013 Senior Farmer of the Year.

Put on by the Madera Chamber of Commerce, the dinner — an annual tradition since 1981 — was defined by humor and humility as Sahatdjian, 93, described his gratitude towards the community which he has served nearly all his life.

“Madera has been good to me,” Sahatdjian told the crowd. “I’m here with some of the best farmers in the world, and I’m not afraid to say that about them.”

In 1963, Sahatdjian co-founded Victor Packing, Inc. with his brother Haig. It remains one of the Central Valley’s largest raisin dehydration, packing, and shipping houses...
