Madera High celebrates Abby Day

N early a year ago, then-3-year-old Abby Grace Needham touched the hearts of the Madera community after being diagnosed with stage-four pineoblastoma, a rare form of brain cancer. On Monday, she touched them again with another visit, showing her spunk even though she remains under treatment.

Abby is the daughter of Duncan Needham, Madera High School drama teacher. She was diagnosed in July 2011 and once school was back in session her story soon spread throughout the school and community.

For the past year Madera High staff, students and the community have rallied together to raise funds for the Needham family and pediatric cancer awareness.

Last September, a football game was dedicated to Abby and Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Yellow shirts with “Abby’s Crew” were sold for a fund-raiser at the school and various locations around town. The stadium was filled with a sea of yellow shirts...
