During a brief moment at Nishomoto Elementary School on Wednesday, a teacher and parent shared a tearful hug in front of hundreds of young students.
“These are all happy tears up here,” third-grade teacher Lisa Howery assured the rapt audience of kids from kindergarten to sixth grade. “You guys did an amazing thing this month and we are very, very appreciative.”
What caused the tears was the simple, kind gesture from the school that considers itself a family; the presentation of a check for more than $1,200 to Christina Tornero, mother of Howery’s student Cristian, 8, diagnosed with leukemia this June.
“You can’t imagine how I feel,” Tornero said with her daughter Natalie, 4, in tow after she received the check. “It’s just, wow. I have no words for how amazing it is, what these kids have done for my family.” ...
