School, community feed 1,500 students and families

A school cafeteria opened later than usual to feed 1,500 people — James Monroe Elementary students and their families — in a community-wide effort to spread holiday cheer.

The annual Monroe Family Holiday Dinner was organized by school staff and the Chicano Correctional Workers Association, whose members contributed into a fund to pay for the meals.

Numerous community organizations and volunteers, from Madera and nearby areas, helped put on the event Wednesday.
