School board changes its meeting place

The prospect of another large audience that would pack the Madera Unified School District boardroom has prompted the administration to change the location of Tuesday’s meeting of the board of trustees.

The school board will meet Tuesday in the cafeteria at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, 601 Lilly Street. Trustees will be in closed session at 5:30 p.m. before emerging at 7 p.m. for the public meeting.

Another protest march by the teachers is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon and evening. The school district and the teachers are in a dispute over contract negotiations, and union members have given their leaders authority to call a strike. The board was forced to change the location of its April 9 meeting because more than 400 teachers, who had been marching in protest before the district building, filled the boardroom beyond capacity.

The agenda for Tuesday’s meeting includes discussion of a timeline for selecting the next MUSD superintendent. The Cosca Group, which has been hired by the district to conduct the superintendent search, will present a proposed timeline that would have the new schools chief hired by July 23...
