Run and walk raises $3,700 for local students

Nearly 100 people walked, jogged, ran and sprinted in a 3.1-mile course at Lions Town and Country Park during an event to raise money for scholarships and sponsorships for local girls.

The Madera chapter of the American Association of University Women organized the Madtown 5K Run and Walk, in which 114 people registered and 94 showed up on Saturday.

The Scholarship Challenge raised $3,700, said event coordinator Rosanna Ayers.

The chapter plans to use the money to fund local scholarships for high school graduates. Proceeds will also be used to sponsor middle school students to attend the annual Tech Trek at Fresno State University, a summer camp which aims to inspire girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math...
