In celebration of February’s presidents birthday observances, the Madera Rotary Club invited local historian and author Bill Coate to present his colorful program of little-known stories of our United States presidents dating back to the early 1800s.

Madera Rotary just completed a matching grant provided by the Rotary Foundation for their Literacy Project. Funds were used to provide a copy of Coate’s book “History’s Shocking Secrets” to all of the Madera Unified School District’s 5th grade classrooms and school libraries.

In addition, the Rotary grant purchased scholastic books for the MUSD preschool program’s lending libraries in 12 classrooms. Two iPads were also donated to the Madera County Office of Education’s Gould Education Center.

James Monroe School 4th through 6th grade social studies teacher Ed Gwartney, and 5th grade student Mariana Hernandez were guests representing MUSD at the meeting.
