Rim Fire continues to grow, mandatory evacuations issued

A rapidly-expanding wildfire that has spread into Yosemite National Park grew to more than 230 square miles Monday and prompted authorities to issue mandatory evacuation notices to several communities threatened by the flames.

The Rim Fire was 15 percent contained and had charred more than 149,700 acres of land by Monday morning, a U.S. Forest Service update said.

Nearly 3,700 firefighting personnel have been called in to try and stop the rampaging conflagration, which has grown quickly in both size and cost — $20.1 million at last count — since it was sparked Aug. 17.

The flames have destroyed at least 23 structures including several homes and threatened 4,500 more, the update said...
