Retired teacher named Rotarian of the Month

Retired Madera Unified School Teacher Sue Thornton was selected as the February Rotarian of the Month.

“Sue joined Rotary one year ago,” said Rotary President Christine Richard, “and she has been actively involved ever since. She took a major role on our Halloween Ball committee and most recently chaired our high school speech contest. She freely gives of her time and her participation has not gone unnoticed.”

Prior to her retirement in 2009, Thornton was a science and math teacher at Thomas Jefferson Middle School for 21 years where she was Teacher of the Year in 1988. She also served as president of the Madera Unified Teachers Association for five years.

Upon accepting the Rotarian of the Month recognition, Thornton responded, “My first year in Rotary has been a positive experience with a wonderful group of people doing wonderful things. Our club supports many local endeavors, but many members are involved in making a beneficial impact around the world as well. I am proud to be a part of the organization.” ...
