More than 1,000 toys given
The hordes of people lined up so far back from the mission, they almost spilled into the streets. Hundreds of people waited for hours to hear the gospel, eat and get a toy during the Madera Rescue Mission’s annual Christmas dinner on Saturday.
Two lines extended from the chapel, which separated those who were there only for gifts from those who wanted a meal and toys. But first, everyone listened to a short Christmas service about the birth of Jesus Christ.
About 40 volunteers from numerous community organizations, including the Madera Rotary Club and the Madera Unified School District, served the turkey meals.
