The more than 100 dogs found at the home at 308 E. 4th St. last month have been reduced to around 45, say officials.
The dogs originally were discovered March 28, behind a patchwork of old wooden fences in the small, 30-by-40-foot yard. Authorities suspect the actual number of hound, pit bull and beagle mix puppies and dogs kept in secret at the rented house may have been even higher at one point.
Once the situation became public, animal shelter volunteers and rescue groups stepped in, and within a day or two were able to take and place about 40 or so of the weaned puppies and some of the younger dogs.
The owner, 72-year-old Nicanor Garcia Santiago, said tearfully then that he had been trying for several weeks to find homes for his dogs, but could find nobody else to take them...
