Committee members, team captains and participants in the 2013 American Cancer Society’s Madera Relay For Life met one last time and shared a potluck dinner at the Department of Social Services in northeast Madera. Door prizes, team participation certificates and many awards were given.
The Madera Relay For Life was recognized at Monday’s gathering for achieving the society’s Pacesetter Award for the number of teams, participants and community involvement. More than 1,000 citizens from across the city attended and participated in the May fundraiser co-sponsored by Parks and Community Services.
Relay For Life chairwoman Charlotte Brewer, an avid San Francisco Giants fan, received a gift certificate to JR Sports and the Giants’ special edition collector’s book, “One Common Goal: A tribute to the 2012 World Series Champions,” for her efforts in coordinating the yearlong effort that culminated in the relay.
The Survivor Camp at the relay was praised for its team participation in presenting gifts to nearly 150 cancer survivors. The Great Beginnings Learning Center was also recognized for organizing the many survivor events prior and during this year’s relay...
