Record participation in annual soccer clinic

The fifth annual Big Brothers Big Sisters Youth Soccer Clinic saw more than 100 kids register to train soccer skills.

Coaches from area schools and teams helped attendees, ages 5-16, learn basic soccer skills as well as teamwork and positive motivation. Coaches present Saturday morning were Jeff Clark, the coordinator of the Madera Ranchos Youth Soccer League; Fidel Dorado, coach of the Central Valley Vipers competitive soccer club, and his assistant Brian Bitter; and Rich Ortiz and his son Richie, of Madera High School.

Big Brothers Big Sisters provided free lunch and refreshments, including lots of water on a hot summer-like day. Each child also received a free T-shirt. Scorcher, the mascot for the Fresno Fuego professional soccer team, made a guest appearance.

According to event coordinator Ren Hallett of the Madera Rotary Club, more than 80 businesses and service clubs sponsored the event...
