A rare find: Maderan's $6 painting could be worth thousands

When Jessica Hathaway bought a $6 oil painting at a Madera thrift store a few years ago she never thought it would be worth thousands of dollars — nor did she anticipate the hassle she would endure from using an online auctioneer to sell it.

The painting, a vibrant landscape of a river, is the work of the late Brazilian artist Francisco Aurélio de Figueiredo e Melo, according to Hathaway and auctioneer Frank Kaminski of Kaminski Auctions in Beverly, Mass.

Hathaway purchased the painting at a thrift store in downtown Madera that has since gone out of business, she said.

“The people that owned that thrift store would buy estate closeouts,” she said. “I bought that painting really cheap, it was a find.” ...
