Pre-trial ongoing for accused Pike killer

Court proceedings resumed Thursday in the case of 25-year-old murder suspect Dustin Gran, the man accused of killing Madera teen Krista Pike more than six years ago.

Much of the day’s pre-trial testimony came from California Department of Justice criminalist Edwin Vargas, an analyst who examined digital evidence in the case.

Vargas used a variety of tools to pull data from the cell phones of Gran and Brittany Navarra, 22, who is accused of plotting the death of 18-year-old Pike at Gran’s hands in January of 2008.

His testimony is expected to be important in establishing the connection between Navarra and Gran as prosecutors allege the two exchanged incriminating text messages and photos of Pike’s corpse over their phones...
