A rash of shootings over the last few days, called a typical summertime increase by authorities, is under investigation by the Madera Police Department.

From last Friday to Monday, five shootings took place within the city and led to four arrests, including three young men charged with involvement in the Norteños criminal street gang.

At just past midnight on Monday, Jaime Moreno, 26, Alexis Contreras, 19, and Jonathan Sanchez, 19, were all arrested after they tried to run from police when they were pulled over.

Detective Sgt. Robert Salas said police were investigating a reported shooting near the 1900 block of Sundance Lane when an officer saw a broken taillight on a car driven by Contreras...
