A multi-year, undercover operation by Madera police has resulted in the breakup of what police called a prolific local auto theft ring.
Undercover officers, operating in an elaborate “sting” with the auto-crime departments of state and national insurance companies, reportedly made at least 17 purchases of stolen vehicles from the suspects. The police then kept the vehicles in storage on an E Street lot as evidence.
Police also recovered many other local stolen items such as credit cards, electronics and firearms, according to the Community Response Unit task force commander, Madera Police Sgt. Robert Salas.
